several police stations were attacked by mobs, police posts were set on fire, and the mobile brigade command headquarters of the jakarta metropolitan police repeatedly became a target. 

amid these conditions, national chief general listyo sigit prabowo issued a firm order that has drawn public attention.

in a video conference that went viral on social media, the police chief urged his ranks not to hesitate in taking action against anyone who dares to breach police headquarters. 

“it is forbidden for police headquarters to be attacked. if they enter the barracks, shoot first. you have rubber bullets, at least shoot their legs. do not hesitate. if anyone blames you, report it. listyo sigit is ready to be dismissed,” said the police chief in the circulating recording, quoted from kumparannews, sunday (august 31, 2025).

the directive appeared to be delivered with deputy police chief commissioner general dedi prasetyo and inspector general of the national police wahyu widada present. 

the video quickly became a hot topic of public discussion amid growing unrest in society.

deputy police chief: if the police collapse, the state collapses

the police chief’s statement was confirmed by deputy police chief commissioner general dedi prasetyo, who was also present during the video conference. 

according to him, firm action must be taken because police headquarters represent the state.

“rioters must be dealt with firmly. if the police collapse, then the state will collapse. let us together safeguard unity, solidarity, and peace for . the state must not lose to rioters who damage police headquarters,” said dedi, quoted from idn times.

dedi emphasized that the directive was not without reason.

several police stations in jakarta and other regions suffered damage as a result of mob attacks.

 the east jakarta police headquarters was reported to be severely damaged, while a number of police posts were burned down. 

the situation, he said, had exceeded the limits of expressing aspirations and entered the realm of criminal acts.

“yes, i also ordered that mobs who breach police headquarters must be dealt with firmly and measuredly, because police headquarters are the last fortress of the state,” dedi added.

president prabowo’s directive: military and police must act firmly

the tension had also drawn direct attention from president .

on saturday (august 30, 2025), the president summoned armed forces commander general agus subiyanto and national police chief general listyo sigit to hambalang, bogor.

the meeting was held behind closed doors, but the president’s directive was clear: the military and police were instructed to act firmly against anarchic actions.

“because the president ordered me and the armed forces commander, specifically regarding anarchic actions, we, the military and police, are instructed to take firm measures in accordance with applicable laws and regulations,” the police chief said after the meeting, quoted from tempo.co.

the police chief stressed that law enforcement measures must be taken immediately to restore public security. 

according to him, in the past two days, demonstrations in several regions had escalated into riots, including the burning of buildings, destruction of public facilities, and attacks on police headquarters.

“such situations no longer fall under the category of expressing aspirations, but rather criminal acts,” the police chief asserted.

although issuing strict orders, the police chief assured that officers would act in accordance with procedures and remain measured.

the use of rubber bullets, he said, was one way to ensure firm action would not result in unnecessary casualties.

“all measures are taken for the benefit of the wider public and to safeguard national stability. officers will be deployed on the ground to restore a sense of security,” the police chief added, quoted from tempo.co.

the statement appeared to signal that the government would not take anarchic actions lightly.
